The Boeing GA-1 ground attack aircraft

Was the first American attempt at a ground attack aircraft

the ponderous airplane was intended to strafe ground troops while remaining immune to attack from the ground as well as from other enemy aircraft. It was so well armored its five-ton weight proved excessive

    Crew: 3
    Length: 33 ft 7 in (10.25 m)
    Wingspan: 65 ft 6 in (19.97 m)
    Height: 14 ft 3 in (4.34 m)
    Wing area: 1016 ft (94.39 m)
Empty weight: 7,834 lb (3,553 kg)
Gross weight: 10,426 lb (4,729 kg)
Powerplant: 2 Liberty L-12A Pusher, 435 hp (324 kW) each

    Performance

    Maximum speed: 105 mph (169 km/h)
    Cruise speed: 95 mph (153 km/h)
    Range: 350 miles (563 km)
    Service ceiling: 11,500 ft (3,505 m)
    Rate of climb: 600 ft/min (3.05 m/s)
    Armament
    1 x 37 mm Baldwin cannon
    8 x .30 cal. Browning machine guns
With some machine guns removed, 10 small fragmentation bombs could be carried.

hardcore, strap yourselves in lads.....and yeah the painter that didnt know when to stop adding, in the end you get a bag of shit, someone should have put their arm around that guy and and said enough is enough mate. Five tons and 65ft wingspan?....Id ask him one question....."are you proud of yourself?"....probably caused more damaged crashing over allied occupied land

Between the World Wars, the United States Marine Corps Aviation pioneered ground-attack and close air support tactics in the Banana Wars. Marine aviators pioneered the technique of dive bombing during interventions in Haiti and Nicaragua. The technique was dangerous though given the lack of strength in the aircraft designs.

Ground attack aircraft were largely seen as unimportant during the initial stages of WW2 ..The German Henschel Hs 123 being the only tailored aircraft in this role saw extensive use in the Spanish civil war and ironically in China against the Japanese

German tactics at the beginning of WW2 favoured the more flexible Stuka Ju87 Dive bomber ..Which was basically an aerial artillery piece used in support of ground operations....Its siren put into use on a bombing run was specifically designed to strike fear into the opposition

Between the A-10 and the AH-64 it's a tossup - except that if you're a grunt on the ground it's nice to know it is Army aviation overhead and not the USAF... Oh, and the sensor suite on the Apache Longbow KICKS ASS if you're operating at night, and the Warthog just doesn't have nearly that level of capability.
