Ground attack aircraft
The term "Ground attack aircraft" or "Schlachtflugzeug" was first used by the German airforce (Luftstreitkräfte) of WW1...with their development of the Junkers J1. Basically an armoured bath tub that protected the Crew and engine from ground fire with the added ability to accurately target trench emplacements due to its slow speed. Entering service in August 1917 in time for the German spring offensive of 1918, not one J1 was shot down.
