    Default Mantis

MANTIS is a fully autonomous next generation UAS. It can fly itself throughout an entire mission and its payload automatically detects and manages all target information. This autonomy makes operations more effective: commanders can focus on the overall task rather than vehicle control, and workload and manpower are reduced, as is the risk of accidents due to human error.

MANTIS is a programme jointly funded by the UK Ministry of Defence and UK industry to develop an autonomous UAS.
BAE says a production version of Mantis would be able to fly at altitudes up to 50,000ft and deliver an endurance of over 36h. The design is a potential candidate for the UK Ministry of Defence's Scavenger requirement, which seeks a persistent intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance capability to enter use from around 2015 to 2018.

Yes many benefits to it, although what others might see as a benefit, I dont. Taking the human element out almost completely isnt something that fills me with that much confidence. See how it performs in theatre, you can almost every test in the book, but its performance in combat is the only one that matters. Plus I hold little hope for Telemos collaborations with the French have hit many snags in the past.

Fantastic concept though...If it does what it says on the tin

36 hrs of fly time for an aircraft of that type is pretty unbelievable. Give it the ability to carry a good range of ordnance, and it will be a winner...The non human side of it still gives me a little doubt

Yeah thats what I was referring to with the telemos programme, the french have been all over it like a rash and further developments of that type will be now shared under telemos.....the french love it and it has all come about from Mantis, any way to spilt the costs aint it. I just hope the process is far more easier then it was with the yanks over F-35. We have done well missiels with french so hopefully things run smooth and it isnt one of those things that we pour major cash into and have to cut our loses without anything to show for it, there was another project of this sort .......the name escapes me at the moment
