The Ranger regiment is not looking for Cavalry scouts, but any MOS can volunteer to attend the Special Forces Assessment and Selection Course. All of the larger bases have an SF recruiting team that looks to sign up the best Soldiers. Do the best you can in Basic and AIT and put in a couple of months of outstanding performance at your first permanent unit - and a whole list of opportunities will be available to you.

    Good luck!

Scouts are respected, yes - their job is to go out on the 'sharp end' and find the enemy, and that requires a good deal of skill, strategy and more than a little luck.

One of my favorite snarky Army sayings - "The mission of the Scout Platoon is to locate the enemy and to mark his position with your burning vehicles"

It'll be funny later, if it isn't now.

When we (tankers) go out to gunnery, before we begin our engagement we hear over the radio "Scouts have reported enemy armor in your sector. Engage and report, out". That's you.
TANKER - That dusty, crusty, grease-covered, dirty, sweaty, bright-eyed, fuzzie-faced,
    haircut-needing, beer-drinking, underrated, over-worked, underpaid,
oversexed, little shit, who can take a tank and do more battlefield damage in
ten minutes than a Grunt squad can do all day.

If you ain't Armor, you ain't shit.

It is difficult to be a good noncommissioned officer. If it had been easy,
they would have given it to the officer corps.- SMA William A. Connelly

Whether you're "respected" or not in the Army depends on whether or not you're Infantry.

But seriously, there's a definite pecking order. Infantry and Armor are at the top, because at the end of the day, they're the ones that do the killing. Everyone else is there to support them. What needs to be remembered is without that support, they can't do the killing. Without Logistics, they have no ammo or food. Without Finance, they're working for free. Without Signal, they can't command or control.
