Beretta M9. It is not commonly used - typically only Commanders and crewmembers of vehicles have them.

Additionally, Mortar gunners, Machine gunners, line medics, and other personnel whose combat duties require the use of both hands are issued a pistol per the T/O&E or TDA documents that spell out what equipment each Soldier in a unit is given.

Also, While the M9 and M9A1 (Beretta 92F variants) Service pistols are the standard issue items, other Soldiers are issued the M11 pistol (Sig Sauer P229, IIRC), and Special Operations Forces (SOF) carry specialized and nonstandard weapons including the HK Mk23 SOCOM .45 pistol and all kinds of others.

Does that answer your question completely?

I am in Afghanistan with a mix of active, reserve and Guard soldiers. I have seen many E-1 through E-4s that are not MPs, Medics, and etc. carrying pistols as I walk right by them with my M4 feeling envious lol. Grunt is right.

My unit issues 9MMs to field grades and higher. I went to my Commander with a CW4 trying to get a M9 (and using my MP background that I am more than qualified lol) but no-go for me but good to go for the CW4. So, I have to wait 6 more years, at least, to be that CW4.

In my Company only the gunners are issued the M9 alone. Drivers, loaders, and TC's all get M4's AND M9's out at gunnery. Reason being is that those three positions can create a makeshift place to store them, gunners cannot.

Google your initial question word for word. The first results you get are "Beretta M9 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia." There you have it.
