    Default portable solar charger

A ham radio operator built himself a portable solar charger. It consists of a sealed lead acid battery(car battery) in a little metal box with a small solar panel that keeps the battery charged. There is also a modified multi meter that that shows the voltages and such. Wouldn't this be nice to have on the field as a solider? Say we get some lighter batteries and maybe more solar panels that fold up so you can charge the battery quicker? What do you guys think?
Here is the article on hack a day and a pdf with some more info on it from the creator, if anyone is interested.

The big Army is already looking at all different sources of power - the problem with solar is that the equipment has to be exposed to sunlight in order to charge - and if the charging equipment is at all heavy, then the equipment/batteries being charged is immobile while charging - and Soldiers survive by being mobile.

There are already some applications of this this tech, though - I run a Casio watch that recharges by solar, so I will never have to replace the battery.

I think I have the same watch, the pathfinder, no batteries is awesome. I have a power mat I bought that I can charge my cell phone, iPod, and my laptop when I'm in the field. It's a fold up array of solar panels. It works pretty well. Not the most efficient thing ever but it does the job when there is no plug around.
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

I love iPod. And now I save money to buy iPod. I will achieve. And by the way, I'm on a diet. I can save money by not buying food. That's a good idea, isn't it?

That depends on how bright the light is, whether the day is overcast, etc. That's one of the weaknesses of solar power - the amount of electricity available varies depending on the weather conditions.
