He can talk to S-1 when he gets to AIT and the NCOIC should be able to help him out. My kid brother did the same thing.
After his AIT he will hve to report to his USAR unit for duty. He should attend drills for about 6 months. During this 6 months he will be evaluated as far as his job, physical conditioning, ect. Once his 6 months is complete his Unit Commander or Unit Administrator can asses wheather he warrants a favorable recommendation for a "Conditional Release".
He can speak with an Active Duty Army Recruiter as soon as he attends his first weekend drill, the recruiter can help him obtain the proper paperwork that will be required.
The key is to remember that he needs to be on time to his Unit Training Assemblies, not have any absences (excused or unexcused) during his time fraim. The Unit Commander can make or break his decision.
Good luck.
