    Default 31B reclass

I'm currently an 11B(Scout) in the TXARNG(Dallas area) wanting to re-class to 31B.

I was wondering if anyone out there knew of any open slots/ or units close to my area.

I talked to a recruiter at my unit and he said the only one he knew about was in Lufkin(224 miles away.)

My RNCO couldn't access the system so he told me to call around and see if I could find any slots.

I've looked up a few units but not sure if a PFC should be calling around annoying other RNCOS.

I also wanted to know what it's like to be a MP.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I'm guessing you mean the TXARNG - and that you're in my Brigade, the 72d IBCT assigned as an infantryman to one our Brigade's Scout platoons or sections. Normally you have to wait until you have served a large portion of your initial contract and are ready to extend your contract (Active Solders reenlist with a new contract; we in the Guard simply extend our current contract) before requesting to reclass. My real question is, are you going through your Chain of Command (Squad or Team Leader, Platoon Leader (Lieutenant), Commander) and your NCO Support Channel (Platoon Sergeant, First Sergeant) to work this? I know that if one of my PFCs started bugging readiness NCOs without letting the Chain of Command and the NCO Support Channel including me as his Platoon Sergeant I'd have a case of the @ss at him... In addition, you must be eligible for a SECRET clearance to be awarded the MP MOS - are you so eligible?

Under the 72 IBCT, the 136th Military Police Battalion is assigned to the 136th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, and is composed of seven units located across the Texas: The HQ in Tyler, 236th MP Co. in San Antonio, 606th MP Co, 702 MP Co, 712 MP Co, 698th MP Detachment (CID), and the 1149th MP Det. (CID). Check out the chart to help locate units by MOS at (LINK) - TXARNG - Locate MOS's - it also includes phone contact information for those units. Other Texas units that have 31B personnel are the 101st FSB (Austin), 102nd GSB (Austin), 712 MP GUARD CO (Baytown), HHC 56TH IBCT (Ft. Worth), HHC STB 56 BDE (Grand Prairie), HHC 72ND IBCT (Houston), HHC 72 STB (Huntsville), 698 MP DET (Huntsville), 702 MP GUARD CO (Lufkin), HHC 136TH MP BN (I/R) (Tyler). But I still say give your leadership a heads up first.

Realize that the above list is over a year old - and there WILL have been some changes since it was published. Confirm before acting on it - and go see your retention NCO. My MP time was while mobilized from the Guard and deployed stateside for Operation Noble Eagle with a provisional MP Company created from a Field Artillery Battery - PM me if you have questions about that.

    Otherwise, Good luck!

Didn't even notice the typo! Gonna have to edit that! I'm with the 56th IBCT. I'm using my chain of command, my SL told me to try a recruiter and talk to the RNCO(RNCO is also in our section). Even though my RNCO told me to call around I feel like that's way above my pay grade to start bugging other RNCO's about open slots.
I know how busy these guys are.

My section is over 200% ,so from what I've been told re-classing won't be a problem, just finding a unit with the slots for 31B will.

I have a few phone numbers off of the list from the website you posted above, but I'm just trying to figure out what I can find out before calling around.

31B is something I wanted to do when I first joined up, but I didn't want to drive real far for drill.
My knees have been giving me quite a bit of problems so I'm trying to get out of the Infantry(particularly scouts) where we walk everywhere with lots of gear.

I have no debt, and no criminal convictions. Just an arrest when I was 17 (23 now) but it was dismissed. I should be able to get a confidential security clearance(hope so).

    Thanks for your help.

    You're a SFC correct?

I am an SFC and a Medical Platoon Sergeant for an infantry battalion, yes.

You need a SECRET clearance for 31B - there is no such thing as a confidential clearance. The levels of security investigations are as follows -
    Basic bacground (NACLC) check
    SECRET clearance
    TOP SECRET clearance (TS)
TOP SECRET - SECURE COMPARTMENTALIZED INFORMATION clearance (TS-SCI)

As long as your Chain of Command and your RNCO are on board, then calling other units' RNCOs will not be a problem. I recommend you write yourself a script and practice it, and then start making those calls. Your spiel should go something like this -

"Hello, Sergeant, I'm PFC XXXXX of X-XXX Infantry, and I'm calling with my readiness NCO's blessing to see about reclassing as an MP. My unit is overstrength in my MOS, my last APFT score was XXX, and I'm fully deployable and have no physical profile issues. Can you tell me if your unit has any open slots, please?"

Then have your e-mail contact information handy, and be prepared to give him your contact information. Lastly, follow up at least twice a week with the readiness NCOs who tell you they have open skill level 1 31B slots, and with your own RNCO and chain of command.

    Good luck!

When I was a PFC/Specialist in the Guard, I called around and spoke to the readiness NCO or 1SG/PSG about MOS openings.

It is your career so you always need to take control of it from the beginning.

From my experience on how it worked, you find out if the MP unit has some slots. It is usually very easy to fill a Level 1 (E4 and below) position. Now back then, we didnt have the ERB like we do now. If there is a slot open, perhaps the PSG would like to see your ERB and have a face to face with you. If they are willing to accept you; then a letter of vacancy memorandum will be given to you so you can start the transfer process.

As Grunt mentioned, you have to meet the criteria for the position. Once you get to that unit; they will start processing you for the items you need to get re-classed (S2 paperwork to get a secret clearance if you do not have one).
