    Default Claiming a dependent. (my brother)

    So my brother is about to be on the streets, is there anyway I can claim him as a dependent and get BAH for it. I just don't want my brother on the streets. I was just curious..Family is always first

    You have to prove that you provide over 60% of his cost of living I believe.

    Yeah I do live in the barracks, I have money order receipts from a year ago.. of sending 300 dollars occiasnally to help him out, around 3300 actually. right after basic i sent him 600 dollars, dont got reciepts for that tho

    Uh hmm, I think that doesn't cut it. How do you provide room and board for him? Would you setup an allotment for him? Is he eligible to enlist or join a peace corps organization?

    Be careful- there is a fine line between helping and enabling. My husband had to make that very difficult decision with his brother a few years ago. Try to be mature enough to recognize it. I understand that things must be rough for him to need the help- but make sure you're helping him learn how to help himself.

    I applied for my parents, not to live with me but to enable them to use military medical facilities and get on post to do business. The form to fill out and fax in is DD 137-3 for parents; I'd imagine it's similar for the sibling. The form was pretty detailed about asking you to prove the financial support and the review time can be quite long.
