Thread: Gear

    Default Gear

    I have 2 questions

    1. Is it mandatory for soldiers to carry/wear a chest rig?

    2. Are soldiers allowed to wear gear and equipment bought from places other than the US Army? (EX - A soldier buys a carabiner or mini flash light from Home Depot, is he allowed to wear it and use it with the rest of his Army issued gear?)

UCPharmD is sighing because - like many young Future Soldiers - you're worried about the wrong stuff. The Call of Duty\Battlefield generation is all worried about whether or not they can put an EOTech on their M4, and wear whatever they want. But that stuff doesn't matter - good equipment doesn't make a good Soldier. Good qualities - motivation, dedication, and hard work make good Soldiers. Not HSLD gear.

One of the biggest responsibilities for Officers is rating the NCOs and Officers that serve underneath them. I Rate my Platoon Sergeant (E6) and Senior Rate four Section Chiefs (two E5s and two E4s). When rating, you evaluate their performance for the past year. When Senior Rating, you evaluate both their performance and potential. This makes or breaks an NCOs career. What do you think I look for when evaluating? Hint: It doesn't have anything to do with the type of carabiner they have hanging off their vest.

1st of all I do not play video games like call of duty or what ever, and second, the reason I ask this is because I have seen soldiers at the local army navy store , and I did not know if they are actually allowed to wear the stuff that they purchase out side of the Army. And last, if I was issued a weapon, I don't think I would be to worried about how ''cool'' it looked, I would just be worried about the performance! - I respect you and your friend here to an EXTREME degree, but please do not assume that I am trying to emulate a video game, in all honesty I was just asking a simple question...

You and your friend here? You can address LT Papachop as Sir and you can address me as Sergeant - seeing as how we've both earned them. Considering you aren't even in yet, have yet to complete basic training or AIT or anything else for that matter... you should concern yourself with how to prepare for each of these tasks individually before worrying about what gear you are/are not authorized to wear. You will wear what your Drill Sergeants tell you to wear and nothing more. When and if you complete all of your training and make it to your unit, you will follow unit SOP as it pertains to gear.

Lesson 1 about the Army - do more listening than talking. I never said you played Call of Duty or Battlefield (for the record, I do - it's not a slam) - I referenced the generation of teens that have grown up playing it. Every other day we see a possible Future Soldier that wants to be a Super Secret Squirrel because they played Call of Duty. And as I very logically explained to you, GEAR ISN'T IMPORTANT. Go back, read what I wrote, and learn something from it.

Here's the long and short of it, we don't know. Every unit is different and since none of us know who you'll deploy with we can't give you an answer.
