Default What Will I Wear? (Army Gear)

The Call of Duty\Battlefield generation seems to be obsessed with what gear you'll be wearing and\or allowed to wear once you join the Army. So here it is in one place. Be advised that what you wear can (and will) be dictated by your Chain of Command - everything from your E-4 Team Leader, to your O-6 Brigade Commander. Some things (i.e. helmet, vest, etc.) are not up for negotiation unless you're a Super Secret Squirrel. Also, this stuff is constantly changing - I'll update things when I get the chance. Or not. Depends on my mood.

    Camouflage Patterns:
    • UCP (Universal Camouflage Pattern) is the current standard issue uniform for the US Army. Your uniforms as well as TA-50 (gear - i.e. ruck sack, ballstic vest, etc.) will be in this pattern.
    • OCP (Operation Enduring Freedom Camouflage Pattern) - also known as Multicam - is the pattern issued to Soldiers deploying to Afghanistan.

    UCP ACUs:

    OCP ACUs:

Army Combat Shirt: Meant to be worn under body armor, it helps reduce heat and prevent chafing. It is only meant to be worn under armor. (Pictured is the inferior Rotcho version, couldn't find a good picture of the Massif.)

IBA (Interceptor Ballistic Armor) or OTV (Outer Tactical Vest: This is the older of the two types of ballistic vest used by the Army today. It opens in the front, and has places to insert ceramic SAPI plates in the front and rear (will stop up to a 7.62). It has MOLLE webbing to attach pouches to.

IOTV (Improved Outer Tactical Vest): Newer version, opens to the side, is more comfortable, and has a quick release to ditch the vest when you fall into a lake. Also has MOLLE webbing.

FLC (Fighting Load Carrier): A vest that can be worn over the IBA\IOTV, or by itself. Various pouches can be attached to the MOLLE webbing; triple M16\M4 magazine pouches, canteen carriers, grenade pouches, etc. The FLC pictured has from left to right:
1x triple magazine carrier (underneath other pouches)
    2x grenade pouches
    1x double magazine pouch
1x triple magazine carrier (underneath other pouches)
    2x double magazine pouches
    1x canteen carrier
For those keeping count, that's room for 12 magazines (basic combat load is 7).

Boots: The Army issues the "Army Combat Boot", pictured. However, after BCT you will be authorized to wear basically any boot that adheres to the following: 8", no side-zip, tan rough side out leather. Oakley, Rocky, Bates, Belleville, and Danner are some of the most prominent manufacturers of boots.

Gloves: You will be issued inserts (crappy cotton things that get holes in them within 2 weeks) and shells (crappy leather outers that protect your hand from cuts, and that's about it).

Patrol Cap: Standard wear for garrison.

ACH (Army Combat Helmet): For when you're getting shot at. Or driving a tactical vehicle. In a motorpool.

Revision Sawfly: Eyepro. If you're small it makes you look like a bug. If you wear glasses, you'll have inserts issued. They make your peripheral vision weird as hell.

Flashlight: It's awesome. Same thing your great-uncle got issued before he went to Vietnam. Actually, it's not awesome at all. It's a piece of dogshit.

Assault Pack: For when you're not carrying much stuff.

Ruck Sack: For when you're carrying lots of stuff.

Definitely not UCP. I would go with the OCP. Army combat shirt because I've been told I look good in it. Patrol cap backwards like special ops or without it.

Lol, this thread will inevitably come to "What sort of pens will I be using?" and "Can I bring my Nike Air Jordan Max Zooms to boot camp with me?"

We're talking Army here, SSG - it's Basic Combat Training, not Boot Camp.
