Default Men and Women in the US Army

I want everyone's input! Women and men both play vital roles in our great Army. We have many things in common, both volunteer and both are offered equal oppertunities for advancement. We are also held to different standards ex: PT, HT/WT, body fat%, and job openings. Let me know your opnions as to why you think this is and is if they have regs or facts to back it up, let me know! Thanks!

This is not only in the US Army does that. Its the Marines, Air Force and Navy. It will take an act of Congress to make the changes that will fully give women the same as men (e.g. women in infantry). We are not at the Starship Troopers level but might happen after I am long gone.

soldier4Life, it is a not debated natural fact that men are different than women (thanks evolution, Odin and Zeus!). In a war or conflict this difference is very prominent. Yes, there are women who beat your butt and throw you out of the window when push comes to shove, but it isn't common or natural. To get to the point: I once was the CO of a PSYOP detachment with many women. There was nothing wrong with their work, in fact in some things they are better than men because women tend to have a better feeling for social and psychological things. But when it came to maintaining heavy equipment (trucks etc.) they were handicapped. In combat arms a soldier deals with heavy equipment and weapons that must be maintained and kept functional in an often miserable environment in addition to the stress of fighting an enemy. If you send a truck out with 2 women on board and they have a flat & they can' fix it, things become dangerous, just to give a simple example. Imagine 4 women on an M1 tank? Can you see them repairing or changing the track in the dark in a muddy field? I can't. My wife can't either. And then all the hygiene stuff....but I don't want to write a book on your post.

This is Birds and Bee's crap here.

There are women that serve in the military that can compete with the best of men and there are men that are just pure wussies (keeping it clean). This will never change.

women are equal to men in a lot of ways but in just as many ways they are not and the same goes the other way around. women can't serve on a sub in the navy and most likely for the same reasons can't serve in combat positions. women require different needs that would requier a lot of extra effort on the military's part. not to mention that once feeling become involved there are a whole new class of problems that are sure to arrise

    Question Next question....

Do yaw think women should be given an opportunity in infantry? When I joined, I asked for infantry and was told it was only open to men. I was furious! My DS nicknamed me "his infantry girl". I do understand hygiene issues as well as physical demands but there are grown men that wash out. Does anyone know if at anytime is history, have women been given the opportunity to try? If a woman can get it done, let her and if not, send her on her way!

from the post above i believe we mentioned that there are women though not common that can meet all the physical demands. however i also mentioned that when both sex is involved new problems arrise (like the possibility of a women becoming pregnant while deployed). it may work if there was an infantry unit made up of all females but currently physical standards for females are much lower than males which means they would have to raise the minimum requierments or lower expectations of the infantry as a whole in order to truly make it equal and lowering expectations should not even be considered. someday maybe but to progressive for our government to put in place when the economy is in shambles.

i'm aware of that, and from what i've heard the army considers that a problem because of all the additional problems that arise from that. these problems become more significant when a soldier needs to be focused on the bullets flying over head. it seems that you are taking these responses personal. just like there is a belief that males are stronger by nature, there is a beliefe that females are smarter by nature (both are stereotypes)
like was statted earlier its not common to imagine a female tank crew repairing busted machinery in the mud at night under fire.

bottom line is, it could happen, but no time soon. take pride in the fact that female soldier maintain many mos that most men would not be suited for.

I do not take it personally because I know how to conduct myself and complete the mission. Aside from limitations on jobs, I feel that women have the same opportunities for leadership and promotions.
