    Default dependands and inssurance

i was told that my wife and newborn will recieve forms that they can take to any military base to get their military id for access to the base about 2 weeks after i get to basic. my wife is going to be staying with family in atlanta while i'm in basic and ait. the question i have is that i was told she can go to the hospital on a base free of charge as my dependand, but i think the closest base to atlanta is 30 mins or more away and thats far to travel with a newborn if he needs medicine for ear ache, cold, whatever. how does military insurance cover you if you go to a regular doctor around town. does it require extra insurance that must be applied for or does it only require a co-pay?

They will have to go to a post while you are in training. Once you are a soldier they can go to a Dr. who is covered by the Region through Tricare. (They will have to pay a copay to use these Dr.s however it is small)

30 minutes really isnt that far of a drive for the savings, and will not be that harsh on a newborn.

She will be able to go to any Military Hospital, Army, USAF, USN or USMC (run by the Dept of Navy).

DOnt let her forget about groceries at the commisary, she may get baby formula a lot cheaper on base as well. Also if she goes to an Army Hospital she can take a class and get FREE over the counter meds. Things like Cough Syrup, throat longeses, pepto bismal, aspirin, tylonol ect. (Not sure about the other branch clinics for the Free meds).

Actually Dibblerjr, they dont have to go to a post while he is in training as long as that doctor accepts tricare they will be ok, and he does not have to pay co-pay that is if they are away from an installation.

Now, 30 minutes away from an installation is by no mean far, 3 1/2 hours is far, 30 minutes its not...so dibblerjr is right, if 30 minutes is how far they will be away from an installation, then yeah I am wrong, she has to go on post or have to pay to see another doctor....

the thirty mins was not an accurate statement because i don't know the closest location to downtown atlanta. but your statement seems to suggest that you can see a doctor off base with a co-pay and even before finishing basic if they accept tricare. you also said "she HAS to go on post or HAVE to pay to see another doctor" so does that mean inside of a specified distance if she does not use base facilities she will have additional cost moreso than if she was outside the jurisdiction if you will?

Yes if she is close to the installation the first thing tricare is going to know is why couldnt she go to the on post (thats tricare prime, where you dont pay anything such as co-pay), or you can register for tricare standard and she can go where ever she wants to go but you have to pay that co-pay and all that...if you stay tricare prime and go off post without a referral (since she is close to base), then she might have to pay.

I was stationed at Fort Gordon, Ga last year which is 90 minutes from Atlanta. Also Fort McPhearson (which is soon to become part of the BRAC process). Yes, you will go to a major base to get into DEERS and Tricare enrolled. (the baby will carry a form? lol). Your ID cards will be mailed to you. Now you can go to whatever hospital to take care of the baby but I know emergencies arent an issue but regular visits, you might need to pay out of pocket. I am saying that because I had so many issues with Tricare when I was in Georgia last year. My family was up north and there are many Tricares that dont talk to one another (e.g Tricare North, Tricare South, Tricare Europe) and they havent been re-imbursing me with the money I paid out of pocket when my daughter was sick and went to a civilian hospital. My advice is use the base hospital.
