    Default soldier's life

I'm sure everyone on the forum can responde to this question. retired or not.
what is/was your mos, and what did you do with your off time at base?

i've heard some bases have rental equipment for sports enthusiast and so on, but i never hear about anybody using them and it gives a sense to a lot of people that once enlisted you work round the clock and do everything in combat boots.

    so lets hear from you.

Im a 42A, currently a Recruiter though, but on my off time as a 42A, I do what I want man, as a single guy I just went out with friends and stuff, married I went home play video games, spent time with family, go out with the wife, etc...I have never rented any equipment inside the base, thats just me.

There is more than just putting my combat boots on and going to work everyday...

    I had many MOSes

    Army, there was 12 now 21B, 42A, 31B now 251A

Marines, there was 4063 and 4067.

After you graduate from AIT, its basically like a regular job except you have to get up early for formation and PT and possibly go to the field and deploy to war. Other than that, its like working with a regular job with bosses lol

On my free time, I lifted weights, played intramurals, headed to the enlisted clubs, travel all over.

The major posts have places on base that rents out trailers or cottages or activities like horseback riding (this was at Fort Campbell). Plus every big post/base has its own golf course.

There is so much to do. You dont see the commercials? lol

i assume your being sarcastic, the only commercials i've seen reminde me of getting ready before a major football game never seen the one with soldiers teeing off at the local country club lol.

i didn't realize they had that much actually on base i thought it was local places that just offered special discounts to troops or that they had rental gear you would have to take somewhere else to use, but a golfcoarse on base and horse back riding is pretty cool, when you get the time.

you said you traveled a lot, other than useing leave and flying on a military plane is it pretty easy to maybe drive another state over or tour in another country if its only over the weekend. i realize you said its like any other job, but do you have to report to anyone you will be out of town?

    Daddy O,

You can google any base and check out there website and search under recreation or see their recreational link.

About going someone on the weekend; it depends on the base policy but its usually like 150 miles without having a mileage pass. Meaning if you going pass that 150 miles, you will have to put in a request (called a mileage or out of bounds pass) and get it approved by the commander. this ensures that the unit knows your whereabouts and if anything happens they have a clue on where you were heading.

I actually had to look at my historic USAF papers to see what 'MOS' I had. The USAF calls that 'specialty number' I believe. Well it was 43250 (upgrade 43270) which means jet engine mechanic journeyman/supervisory level. Off time I did what all the other guys did in my room (we were 4). Travel around (I had a car), go to the club, drink beer, eat fancy food, look for girls, sit in the dayroom watching TV (B&W then), argue and BS, keep your gear clean, go to work, fishing at the beach, see movies, occasionly do household chores (cleaning shower & toilet, do Kitchen Police in the mess hall). Nothing exciting. That was basically it.
After the USAF I went to the U and took ArmyROTC. My branch was 1203 which means 'Armor Officer' but I also later had others like PSYOP Officer. After Graduation I lived like an officer. Own appartment, car, looking for women, travel, going out for dinner etc. The usual male stuff, nothing unusual. After I got married things changed to normal just like millions of American males. My hobbies were cars, a boat & Motor home, my PU, house, hunting, fishing, restoring antique cars, my family & career. No big deal.

MT, the part about restoring cars sparked a question. i like messing with my cars here and there and i almost baught this old '52 Pontiac Chieftain to fix up, but it was sold before i got it and i don't really have a garage to use. i heard almost every base has a garage with tools for everyones use. is it just a basic garage like oil, brakes, and tires?

Daddy, most bases/posts in the USA & Germany (other civilized places) have a place called Auto Craft Shop. There you can (for a small fee) get a bay and do the works to your wheels. They have all tools, lifts, cranes, equipment that you need, but have strict rules on cleanliness, environmental stuff, behavior etc. But it can save you $$$$. It is the most popular recreational facility in the service.

Yea, the Auto Craft is a popular spot for everyone. The one at Irwin was lame, but it was enough that it had a lift, bay space, even a fenced in area to keep your car when it wasn't alive. My buddy had his 62 Nova sedan there for a couple months. Fees of course.

I was a 19K, I was single until just before I got out. I drank in the barracks with friends and coworkers, we went to Vegas on the weekend (didn't need a mileage pass for that), or LA (hated LA), but most of the time I jammed out with a couple buddies. I picked up bass guitar when I was in as a hobby and it became a passion. Other guys have MMO video games, others have Madden or Halo, then you've got your musicians, photographers, movie watchers and movie makers, everyone has their hobby. Find something besides drinking. But you said your married, so do the family events.
