    Default Hello from Texas, sorta

    Hello all,

I am originally from Texas but I have spent the past 2 years living in Chicago. Anywho, I am from a family with a long tradition of military service in the army, navy and air force and I have always had a great respect for the men and women who serve our country. I am planning on enlisting in the next few months and thought I would start to get involved in some forums online to chat with other likeminded men and women. I am hoping to enlist as an 18x, I have wanted to be a green beret for a long time and have always been infatuated with their storied history and their incredible bravery. I know that it is going to be incredible difficult to make it to the end but I know I can do it, I think that is the only attitude one can have. I plan on taking the next 6 to 8 months to ensure I am in the absolute best physical shape I can be. I am in good shape already, and can score over 200 on the PFT but am not willing to settle for anything less than the absolute best, and I plan on achieving a perfect 300.

Well I am done with my rant, I will be asking some questions for feedback from members as I run my training regiment by them for suggestions and criticism.

    Thanks

    Hey Cruss,

Firstly, welcome and I hope you enjoy the forums.. OK, on general pointers, may I redirect you to my thread "For those about to enlist, I salute you!"... its a sticky and will give you some good starting pointers for Basic training, etc.

As for the "Green Berets", to quote a member of the now defunct "Army.com" forum whom is a Special Forces Soldier, "A green beret is a wooley hat, what would you want to be a wooley hat?. We refer to ourselves as "SFs" or "Special Forces Soldiers""... Hope that clears up that misunderstanding about how the world terms SFs and how they actually regard themselves as.

Mental preparidness, conditioning through gradually increasing training and get rucking, start learning land navigation and condition your body through ruck/route marches starting from 5 miles to 30 miles incrementally remember to get training in Land Nav before you start rucking and always bring a buddy.... no point in getting lost out there.. and remember safety always..

Good luck to ya and shoot with any questions, Im sure someone here can assist...

Here is what I have been told about SF

    "Infantry: This sucks
Army Ranger: I like the way this sucks
Special Forces: I wish this could suck more"

    Good luck.

Thank you for the suggestions and correction on how to refer to SFs.

I have some, mind you very limited experience with Land Nav, but I believe something is better than nothing to start on. I picked up a large alice pack that I am going to start rucking with and build my way up to heavier weight to become more familiar with the feeling.

Thank you for the welcoming and I look forward to asking plenty of questions and to getting ready for everything.

The land nav evolution is probably the test where most fail at SFAS. I'd suggest not only getting into world-class athlete condition but learn how to navigate, alone, in the dark for great distances under adverse conditions. using compass & map & absolutely no GPS. It's not that SF doesn't use GPS but what happens when the batteries go dead or the GPS unit is out of commission?

This holds to a somewhat lesser degree for trying out for the 75th Ranger Regt at RASP. Assessment is assessment regardless which Special Operations unit you want to get into. They certainly don't make it very easy.

My suggestion to those who want to go SF? Get into the Army first, preferably an Airborne unit if possible. Better yet the Rangers. In any event try to get to Ranger School. The 82nd Airborne sends many there. You don't necessarily have to be in the Ranger Regt. where it's mandatory to go to RS. Sometime while you're on your first enlistment put in for SF. Meanwhile train with your unit & by yourself to be able to have a shot at passing SFAS. Learn as much as you can. Ace the APFT. Be the best at land nav in your unit & in all other facets of the Army. Enlist the help of your NCOs. SF & the 75th Ranger Regt only select the best of the best. Be one of those Soldiers.

Thank you, I would say the run is my weakest right now, for the sole fact that I have not trained as much for it, I have been doing strenth training the past few months and and preparing to start the running in the next few weeks in addition to starting ruck marches.

Anytime buddy... *2 to what MSG Glenn said.. Top is right, Land Nav is a huge huge skill and difficult for many to learn... getting lost is practically a pass time for many of us, but those with a natural sense of direction, good situational awareness and a memory that remembers landmarks... its an awesome advantage to have... those without it work harder and those folks are 99% of us.... (myself included...LOL..)
