    Default Hello from Tampa Florida

Hey there, name is Jason. Been lurking for the past week. I have been wanting to join the Military since I was 17 years old. My great grandfather on my mom's side served in WWII. I don't know what he did, he didn't really like talking about it, I assume he experienced some pretty heavy stuff. My grandfather on my dad's side served in the Korean War and my grandfather on my mom's side served in Vietnam.

I originally wanted to join the Marines, but changed my mind during my divorce and that holding me back from enlisting back in March of '09. Now that I had a little over a year to get my divorce finalized, I am graduating college next month with an associates in computer networking, I have decided to enlist into the Army as 15U. That was the next best thing to getting information technology due to the fact that I like to troubleshoot and repair. Plus the possibility of being able to fly a Chinook helicopter in the near feature is very exciting.

My ASVAB scores are still locked up by the Marines and was scheduled for MEPS last week, I was told that I couldn't go because of it and I am supposed to go this week coming up. I was able to secure a job in the recruiting office. My secured job for 15U states that I am scheduled to leave for Fort Jackson 20101110 then Eustis.

Congratulations on the 15U reservation, Jason! Welcome to AF.com & to the Army.

Hopefully everything will go well for you at MEPS. There's no reason why it shouldn't.

I personally think you made a wise choice to go Army over the Marines. There's nothing wrong with the USMC but I firmly believe that you'll have more opportunities in the Army. I know a couple of young men that enlisted in the Corps, one of them from our Judo club that I helped with his PT before he shipped to bootcamp. They're not exactly unhappy with their decision but both said that now they kind of wished they would have gone to the Army instead. Both are thinking of a career in the military & will probably go in the Army for their next enlistment, especially when they heard of my son's experiences as an Army Ranger & mine as a Paratrooper. That's the route they really wish they would have taken or at least in the Airborne which they probably won't get in the Corps. The Marine for our Judo club is slated to go to Force Recon training after his deployment & is now a Scout/Sniper. We'll see. He has no guarantee that he'll be able to go. He'd get Airborne School if that happens anyhow.

This is a good time for you to get into shape for BCT & AIT. Get into the PT habit. A half a year will do it nicely.

Good luck. Its a shame that you didnt try to get a Signal MOS (25 series) with your education in computer networks.

Semper FI. Poolees join the Corps to earn the greatest title in the world. My cousin retired from the Marines as an MSGT (he was a helicopter repairman) and he wouldnt wanted to serve in no other branch. SGT Basilone is a famous Marine (featured in The Pacific) that was former Army before becoming a Marine (sounds like someone I know lol) The Army does offer more opportunities hence why many former Marines come into the Army.

Welcome JJ, hope you enjoy the forum... good job on the 15 series, and Top is right, there is better opportunities Army side... Marines are a good organisation, whom I respect as warriors... but they are limited in opportunities and theres always room to grow in the Army, if your metal is tempared with Spartan Steel!!...

Please see my general pointers on enlistment called "For those about to Enlist, I salute you!"...

    Good Luck
