    Default My Introduction

Hello everyone, my name is Andy. I'm 22 years old and have just entered the Kentucky National guard (in January). I've been around the military all of my life, my dad is on his 27th year with the Kentucky Guard and my grandfather was a in both the navy and air force, so I guess it kind of comes naturally. I'm still trying to figure out my path as to what I'm planning to do when I come back from BCT/AIT. I'm considering the officer route as well as the Warrant officer option, but I guess there will be plenty of time to figure all of that out once I've got my feet wet. I'm shipping out on the 28th of this month to BCT at Relaxin' Jackson, so if anybody has any pointers for me that would be great. Anyway, look forward to learning all I can from you guys. Thanks for the space.

Welcome to Army Forums.com & to the Army, Andy.

Are you in good physical shape - good enough to score well on the APFT? If not you have less than a month to get there. You're unit probably has assessed your PT abilities by now & your dad & your Recruiter should have been running your ass off like I did with my son when he was about to enlist & until he actually shipped to Benning. He had to come in in good condition because he had an Airborne Ranger contract & needed all of the skills that he had to qualify. Doesn't matter. I still would have insured that he could pass the APFT with a good score.

Which MOS did you sign up for? Where will you go for AIT?

I know the Guard normally has their own OCS program. Ultimately you need a bachelor's degree but two years 0of college is all that's required to start OCS. You need then to get your bachelors within 2 years after commissioning. But as for being a Warrant Officer you need to have the right MOS in the technical fields or go for Warrant Officer Flight Training. Then you have to have determine whether your unit has slots for technical warrants or helicopters for pilot warrants.

    Good luck to you.

I'm not sure how well I will score on the 2-2-2 APFT, I can pass the 1-1-1 test pretty easy though. My MOS is a 35F (intel Analyst) so I'll be doing 19 weeks at Ft. Huachuca Arizona. I currently have an associate degree but the college I (mistakenly) went to is only accredited with like one other school so I can't transfer much if any credits to a state college for ROTC. I will basically be starting over from the beginning.

I'd advise giving yourself the regulation APFT to see where you stand. There might be a big difference between doing each event in twice the length of time you're used to. You should't have a problem, though. Don't worry too much about it. You'll be given enough PT in BCT to be able to pass the required 50 in each event to graduate. It's a whole lot easier on you if you can get a good score before you ship to basic.

I can pass the push ups and situps with no problem as it stands. Its the runs that kill me. I'm in a lot better shape now than I was when I started this venture, however I can't get it off my mind that I might fail at BCT physically. That is the main reason I didn't go in right after high school and I still have that worry. I played 4 sports all through high school and dont have a problem with physical activity, I just have like a mental block of failing the run. Last month I ran my official 1 mile in 7:49.

Get it out of your mind that you gonna fail and think positive. Just keep running for long distances at a slow pace and build endurance. Spend a day or two on sprints until you winded. You will get better.

Don't stress over the run, I'm sure it will improve during BCT, I know mine did. I went through Jackson this past November, you will enjoy your time there after the initial culture shock BCT is actually a lot of fun. As far as pointers, I would go ahead and learn the Soldier's Creed, Army Values and your 3 General Orders. Good luck and drink plenty of water.

Thanks a lot for the replies. I'm planning to keep up my training until I ship and I'll probably be stopping by here either in AIT or after.

Good luck to you at BCT & AIT, Andy. Stay in touch as much as you can for any questions you might have.
