    Default Another Noob

    Not Yet Serving\Applying
    1. Age - 33

    2. Alma Mater - St. Johns High School, Phoenix College (AAS), American Military University (BA)

    3. Sports - Formerly Softball, Track and Marching Band; currently cycling, both road and mountain

    4. Activities - Hiking, camping, working too much, homework, yoga, Star Wars

    5. Why I Want to be a Soldier - I want to serve the people of my state, my country and the world in hopes of making it a better place. Interested in carrying on the proud Army tradition of my father and grandfather. Time to give something back.

    6. Possible MOS\Branch Interest - Arizona National Guard, 68W

    7. Current Progress Towards Application - Met with recruiter, scheduled for ASVAB 2/27/12

    8. Additional Comments - I've spent the last 5 years working as a Massage Therapist which has interested me in carrying on in the medical field. I am hoping to finish up my BA this summer, just in time to (hopefully) ship to BCT in the fall. I'd like to go in as an E-4, but I currently work 3 jobs so I'm not sure I'll actually be able to finish before I ship. Eventually I'd like to become a Warrant Officer and return to school to become an Occupational Therapist.

You better hurry up, that 35 is sneaking up on you...

I was told by my recruiter I have until 42 in the Guard in AZ to go Warrant if thats what you are referring to. But yes, I'm not getting any younger! I'll turn 34 at BCT this year if things go according to plan.

Well seems my dream was crushed today before I even got started. Went in and did well on the ASVAB yesterday, only to find out today there are no 68W slots in the state, and they are overstaffed on top of that. Really bummed.

Ok since no one else wants to say it....your "dream" shouldnt be a certain MOS, it should be to join beforre is too late. Sit down with the recruiter, have him pull the vacancy list for your area, pick a job that you are ok with doing, enlist....down the road if you stay in, reclass to your "dream" job....also, talk to the Reserves, if the NG has no slots for 68W, maybe the Reserves does...we dont talk to each other so asking the NG recruiter about the reserves is like asking the Army recruiter if the Marines have a certain job available....also, the NG recruiter will try to talk you out of going reserves or even talking to them as he will lose a contract....not saying all do, but some are very scared of letting their applicants talk to other branches.

MP, you are not the only one to give me such advice. I spoke with a friend who is in the AANG and he says the entire state is over-strength right now. He felt it would not be hard to reclassify to 68W from another MOS, but I wonder how likely it is especially after I just join? My recruiter said there might be a chance for more 68W to open in October, so what if I sign up for something now and want to reclass right away? My recruiter has been very understanding and told me if I wanted something now to go look at the Reserves or other branches, but honestly I'm really mostly interested in the mission of the Guard. Maybe thats a bad place to be, and maybe I'll end up talking to a Reserve recruiter just to see, but I'm not some 18 year old kid who has no idea what to do about my life so I'm ready to just sign anything. My intent to join was to serve on a local, national and international level in the medical field helping people and giving something back. Not stacking boxes on a food truck.

Hehe and you think 68w dont stack boxes on a food truck, think again. Once you join you are a Soldier, if i need you for a detail, i dont care what your MOS is, you going to clean latrines, mop floors, pick up cigarett butss you did not smoke, mow grass you cannot otherwise step on, areapurification, G.I. party, etc.

If 68W is all you want then hold out for it, but if you turn 35 or you are too close to 35 when you finally enlist, you wont as you have to ship before your 35th...the NG might be going up to 42, but i doubt it.

To answer your question, if you enlist now and 68w opens up later, you wont be able to switch...you will have to wait a while before you can reclass (2-3 years at least).

Haha. Everybody gets the rude awakening after they are in. Like a former Guardsman told me "As a civilian, I am technical engineer for a fortune 500 company; as a National Guardsman (saying this with a mop in his hand), I am a janitor!!

Well Chief doesn't get the trash at 1630 but downrange I had barracks cleaning details since we did not have any Afghani cleaning crews to do it for us.

Every MOS and branch, when you are junior enlisted, will do crap jobs. Cleaning, mopping, moving one thing to another place then moving it back an hour later. This is how the military works no matter what. Get used to it or don't join.

I have no problem doing crap jobs and helping out, so please don't take it that way. My only point is that I do not want my assigned MOS to be a crap job. I have no problem picking up the slack, but I do not want to be stuck for 2-3 years doing something I loathe all the time just waiting until I can re-spec. I'd rather wait and go in under something I want to do, then maybe when I get stuck mopping the floor it wont be as bad.

On a different note, there are a couple of MP positions open here and that was another MOS I was interested in, however what I really want to do is be a dog handler. Is that an additional skill identifier, or how does one get into that position? Are there even dog handlers available in the NG?
