Default prior service Marine grunt...what's Army offering Jan 2010?

    Fellow Hardchargers -

I got out in Oct 2000, Honorable RE-1. USMC - I was a primary 0311 rifleman/infantry with secondary 0341 (mortar) and 8152 (security forces guard).
I have a solid job in the 1st Civ Div as we speak (window office downtown Seattle!) but have always had the idea of doing 16more in the back of my head. Hind sight is a mofo!

Anyway - has anyone (prior service) spoken recently with recruiters in late-Dec 09 and Jan 2010 re: MOS's and what the active Army is offering prior service right now?

Any help is appreciated. NG called the other day and told me that they are taking prior service WITH the option of switching MOS'. However, going active after joining the NG aint gonna happen....well, there's only a small chance no matter what the recruiter told me on the phone.
If I do this.....Im doing 16more. I told him that I'd be willing to sign for 6yrs with active Army if everything looks the way I'd prefer.

    Any help is appreciated and in closing;

Thank all of you for your service and/or willingness to serve.

    Semper kill.

I was in the same boat devil dog. Had the nice suit and tie on Wall Street after getting out of the Corps. I been active Army for over 6 years and been in both wars.

Think very hard if this is what you want to do. If you have a good civilian job; I suggest the reserve components; even the MC reserves.

Why the itch now besides the 16?

    Sir -
    Thank you for your reply.
Why the itch? Ive had it for years....especially when I hear from the (non-rates, newbies, boots) guys who were in the squad I ran as an NCO 10yrs ago who are now SSGT and running the show. I always have felt like I still owe it to my brothers and my country since the initiation of our f-d up foreign/war policy. That may seem odd but its fact that I feel that way. In addition, there is no such thing as a pension anymore out here in the Civ world!
I cannot go back into the Corps or I would. I have tattoo sleeves on both arms and the Corps has gotten very "PUS*Y" re: tattoos. I am perplexed as to their stance on tattoos. It is such horse-sh*t.
My job is good but does not satisfy me. In addition, I have 2 young sons so this decision would be a hard one and one I may not pull the trigger on based solely on my kids. The wife? I can do without her for a deployment. :-) It's the kids....
The whole NG or Reserve thing just doesnt do it for me. If I did the military thing again, I'm going active as a retirement pension is paramount.

    Whoo-rah.

    Default Roger that!!

I totally understand brother. If you dont have a good civil servant job (and some want you to retire at 25 years of service); the 401K is not going to cut it.

That was my same sentiment and I finally hit 20 years of service in 23 days and another raise

I did return to the Guard before going on active and it was a good transistion because I ended up finishing my bachelor's degree and using the GI bill money in conjunction with state TA funds. I was making some good coin back then.

But like I said, many former devil dogs have transistioned to the Army and are doing great things.

    Good luck.
