Default new here, looking for a little info on option 40

    hello,
I have been looking into everything about the option 40 ranger contract for about a month and stull have a few questions, which im hoping to get a little help with. First of all, i was hoping someone could point me in the right direction for finding materials to prepare myself. I was hoping that i could find maybe a handbook or something detailing things like formations, tactics, ect. that i would need to know for RASP. I do realize you would learn all this but i want to go in knowing as much as i can, Also i heard, and have no idea if its true that you must go into a ranger battalion as an E-1. I will be graduating with my BS degree before i enlist. If this is true would this mean my pay would be as an E-1 as opposed to an E-4.
thank you in advance for any help!
    -Matt

No you would enter as a SPC, they might make you "earn" your rank, but the paygrade you would have...its not like that in the conventional Army but I could see it happening in the Ranger/SF field...

You might have to wait a while for an Option 40 contract, Matt. I hear that RASP is filled until fall of this year. There are always dropouts so you never know. Mpclk could probably tell you more of the present availability. Also the needs of the 75th Ranger Regt might change in your favor. If that's what you really want the wait is worth it. A good chance for you to get you PT rewally up to speed

Six years to the day, 29Jan04, my son left for Infantry OSUT with an Option 40 contract in hand. He had to wait from July to December to get even an 11X contract. Fortunately Option 40s were also available. When he finally got it it was a bonus for 11X, Airborne & Ranger. From being totally unavailable to a bonus contract in that short time. Even though the need of Rangers in the 75th were there there was still only a pass rate of less than 50% in RIP as it was known as then. The standards only go up, never down.

Before this new year they were offering RASP holdovers an immediate transfer to the 82nd Airborne to get rid of some students. Many took them up on there offer. As of last week I heard that the APFT has a passing grade of 80 in all events & out of those that pass they're only taking the top 18 so it's a good idea to be physically fit enough to get a 100 in each. By the way - the APFT is given on the first day of RASP & it's at the 17-21 age group regardless of your actual age. Many don't make the grade & many of those don't even get into an Airborne unit even with jump wings.

Good luck in your pursuit of an Option 40.
