Default Joining the Guard, Got a few questions...

Trying to decide on a MOS, right now its between Satellite Communications and Unmanned Arieal Vehicle Operator, I was also thinking about Information Systems Operator. Anybody have any insight to these MOS's, what the job is like and how I can use the experience and training in the real world to get a good job.

Also I talked to my recruiter Monday for the first time then we came back in Tuesday and gave him most of our paper work. He ended up getting the majority of it himself by Tuesday and he has us take our ASVAB pretest. I scored a 68 (I had no idea I was taking the ASVAB so I didn't study at all). He tells us we would take our ASVAB in ATL that Friday. He ends up calling me later on Tuesday and tells me to grab a change of clothes because he had me scheduled to goto take my ASVAB Wednesday and stay overnight for MEPS. I was just wondering if this was a little weird to anybody or if anybody else was rushed into everything like this. I'm afraid once I get to MEPS they will push me to choose a MOS I don't want. I've read a lot of stories about that happening, I just want to make sure I get the MOS I go up there thinking I'm going to get. I know I have to score well on my ASVAB but I think it will be no problem. Thanks for any information.

I'm in the Guard now in Ohio. You should note that the Guard is a world of difference than the active Army. I would HIGHLY recommend you spend some time on the active side before you go Guard. You have to understand that unless you have a MOS in high demand there isn't much opportunity for advancement (ie: promotions) my brother is a 25 series and he's been an E4 for quite sometime and theres only one e5 slot in his unit which is currently filled so he's basically S-O-L unless he changes his MOS or units. We also have some 92F's in my unit who haven't been able to do their job at all so their being retrained as 63B's. But, if you have your heart set on the guard I'd suggest a high demand MOS like 88M, 11C, 21B, 63B, 31B or something of that nature. Also your MOS and other stuff depend more on your GT score then anything else. Well, best of luck to you.

btw, I am a signal warrant officer and can give you insight. but going guard or active will be your choice as well and picking your mos. dont let anyone guide you into doing something you dont want to do. he is rushing you since you did well on the practice tests and sees you as a suitable applicant. anyway, if you have any questions, get back to me so i can give you some more info.

Don't let these people push you around...they're all a bunch of crooks. They lie and manipulate. You tell them what you want, dont let them tell you what they can do for you. It's a legally binding contract and your future/career. If they dont give you what you want then get up and walk away...I guarantee they'll chase you down and give you what you want. EXAMPLE: I wanted Infantry and a good bonus....at the time they didnt have infantry slots because Benning was so over crowded and no bonuses for some odd reason....so I told the guy at MEPS I wouldnt be signing a contract unless I had those two things. They brought my recruiter in and they tried to talk to me into other stuff like artillery and mp...i also got a speech about if I was joining for money it was for the wrong reason...just a bunch of typical propaganda these guys are trained on...I told them again I wasnt signing a contract unless my needs were met...the MEPS counselor got on the phone and made some calls...I walked out of MEPS with an infantry slot and a 20,000 bonus.

check it out man the entry process sucks and yes your recuiter is rushing you but your first time you swear in is negoatiable so dont worry also dont listen to any body else about guard or active if your not married and you dont have a family do either me personally i would have went guard because if you get in and you dont like playing soldier you only have to go once a month two weeks a year if you do like it you can go active at any time (i think you have to be in 6 months) but do reserve not guard there are alot more limitations to the guard than the reserve i know sound weird if your into avation check out the air national guard lots to look at dont let this fool rush you its your choice do it for you

yes, i've heard about the certain limitations set on the national guard. don't remember exactly what they are, but I do believe that they are state funded as well as federally funded. This may pose a few limitations, but like i said i don't recollect exactly what they are.
