I was wondering if someone could give me some facts about the army so I can pass it along to my wife and other people.

My wife has recently decided she wants to be an Officer in the Army because of the opportunity it lends among other things. I am totally on board with her doing it, however the flack I have and especially my wife has received for wanting to join the Army is getting to us a little bit.

Her brother, which is in the Marines, has said some pretty harsh stuff about the Army. Basically that the Army has a lot of problems... they will take anyone into the Army which makes it unsafe for women... He said all fo the Army bases suck and are unsafe because of gangs and the Army is very undisciplined... He also said since The Army is hurting for Officers that at the end of your enlistment they can make you stay in indefinately. He also said that the deployments are 18 months or longer.

I know that he is probably just making most or all of this up because he hates the Army. As a woman officer in the Army what is your take on it and your opinions of the Army? Is it a good idea for her to join (we dont have kids or anything like that) or is it something you think she will be miserable doing?

She has a degree in Chemestry and a minor in Intl Business, scored very well on the ASVAB and has passed through MEPS just fine... she is meeting with the Col. tomorrow and then in 2 weeks is contract time. Is there anything she should know or do before then? Any help or ammunition to combat the critisism would be helpful.

Its the same with any branch of the military to talk down to each other. The Army doesn't deploy for 18 months, the National Guard and Army reserves sometimes do. As an officer her interaction with enlisted males will usually stay on the senior level. With the two degrees she has, a specialty in the medical field is a definite possibility.

The Army really isn't a bad place. Granted the bases aren't the best but a lot of Army personal are stationed at Navy, Marine, and Air Force bases around the world. Your wife will not be indefinite after her initial enlistment is up. Just take everything you are told with a grain of salt. Best of luck!

I will tell you, there are several of us "old timers" here that started out in the USMC, I did 11 years of active duty USMC and switched to the Army. I would not trade my experience for anything but will say that the Army life is much simpler than the USMC. The Army has vehicles in the USMC we had "our feet", only the weak got to ride.

I assure you that if her brother was around soldiers and airmen during their daily activities not a day would go by that he wish he would have joined either of them. If he goes or has been to Okinawa he will wish he would have joined the USAF, if he goes to Japan or Korea he will wish he joined the Army. That is just the way military espirit works, they pump you up (esp. the USMC).

Your wife and you should base her choice on the benefits for (you and her) not for everyone around you. This is how families are drawn to odds, everyone thinks they know what is better for you, until the shit hit the fans. Then everyone doesnt know how to help you.

Best of luck and if you need any additional info on the differences shoot myself and warrantofficer a pm, bet you get the same responce from both of us.

I like how he said we take anyone, does he realize that up until about 2 months ago, both the Army and the Marines were taking almost anyone?? Now pretty much all the services are on the same level of "pickiness" on people we allow in, the Army has lots of problems? Ask him to explain. Gangs in the Army? Possible, but they are in the other branches too, has he seen the show on TV (I think history channel), there was a gang member that shot and killed/injured several police officers in California, he was using military tactics to attack them, he learned them in the Marine Corps.

Crypt22, ribbing and animosity between branches & military services is as old as soldiers have been around and I understand that has been a while being the second oldest profession on earth. Deciding which service is better, smarter, better paid, more comfortable, tougher, easier is sort of like debating the best looking color, the best tasting food or the prettiest woman. If someone hates the military it makes no sense to convince him/her otherwise. My advice to your wife is to decide what she wants to do and where (in which service) can she best fulfill those goals. The rest of the discussion is stupid.

All I can say is that I spent my entire life growing up with an air force dad who talked down the other services. When I was a kid (well, I still kind of am-i'm 17), I was positive that the air force was the right branch for me. Fortunately, I did my research before signing. I weighed the pros and cons for me personally before joining and I'm glad I did because the army ended up being the right fit for me. Also, don't listen to those telling you about creeps in the army. I haven't met any, and the men I know in the army are well disciplined people. Granted, not everyone is perfect, which is why there is a buddy system to prevent rape and stuff like that. Also, I've never heard anything about the whole "gang" thing, so I can't say for sure, but it sounds like a rumor to me. Tell your wife good luck and godspeed!

Erni93- No rumor to the gang activity in the Army/ Military. In such a large employer there are bound to be gangsters that slipped through the system and then learn that they can carry on their gang related activities in the military, all they need are weak minds.

In 2008 there was a gang member from LA, CA that stabbed a high school basketball player while he was in a regional game at his HS in the Fort Drum area. The gang member was in the Army and stabbed the student for no appearent reason. Later it was found he had posted a lot of his gang activities on his Myspace account.
