    Default Thinking about enlisting

First off i want to say how much respect i have for anyone in the millitary, and thank you. I really appreciate what you people do. That said, i came to this forum to try to get some general info about the army and enlisting. I've been talking to a recruiter, but i want to get info from more than one source. Im 25 years old. I graduated from college a couple years ago and I just feel like i could do more with my life. Im not looking to the millitary to pay off student loans..mine are paid. Im not looking for a job either..i already have two. One of my employers will pay for me to go back to school to get my masters. So its not education im after either. I honestly cant pin point exactly why i want to join...it could best be described as a 'call of duty' i guess. I cant stop thinking about it.

Question 1.) Being that i have a 4 year degree i could enlist as an e-4. Does that mean i would be ranked as an e-4 (corporal or specialist), or does that mean i will only be paid as an e-4 and still be a private?

Question 2.) If i did enlist as an e-4 and wasnt just getting e-4 pay, what would i be, a corporal or a specialist? Whats the difference? How long does it typically take to advance? What factors determine advancement?

Question 3.) I know i could try to get into OCS. Even though i have 2.5 years supervisory work experience, I dont really feel like I would get accepted. Anybody have any advice on OCS? Is it something i should def. try to do as a college grad?

Question 4.) Im pretty much assuming im going to be deployed to Afghanistan. How long are the typical deployments there on average? I thought i read that average deployments to iraq were around 15 months (and multiple).

Question 5.) I know i might be putting the cart before the horse here, but im thinking about Ranger school also. I want to have an infantry MOS. Even though im 25 i'm in very good physical condition. I've been working out for 2 hours per day for years and have no problem running 10-15 miles at all. My questions are: can you get a chance at ranger school in your contract upon enlistment? or is it something you have to earn after enlisting? Would i be a prime candidate for failure as a new enlistee? I would assume that most who succeed in ranger school have been in for a while and are very experienced.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to answer my questions.

    1) You will wear the rank as SPC/ CPL and be paid as an E-4

    2) SPC is an E-4 and is still considered junior enlisted, worker. CPL is an E-4 and considered a NCO (non commissioned officer), junior leader. 99% of CPL's are in infantry units. You would not be appointed a CPL until you report into your unit and prove yourself worthy of the NCO title. Part2: You would be selected for E-5 based on your composite score, you would have maxed out your education points since you have a BA. If you are a stellar performer I am guessing 1-1.5 years until you are E-5.

    3) OCS is totally up to you. M.T. may have some more on the subject. It is def worth the pay and supervisory experience.

    4) 12 month deployment to theater, however you will/ may have several months of pre deployment training prior to leaving statesde. You will go to Iraq, Kuwait or Afgh.

    5) Yes I believe you can get a Ranger option in an enlistment contract, the only one with the real info would be the guidance counsellor at MEPS. Many before you have enlisted and made it through all the training of Ranger school. Remember, if you can get the option you will attend fresh out of BT, you will be in the best shape of your career after BT.

Mac, whether or not you qualify for OCS can only be determined by a test which you can get if you go the regular recruiter route. If you don't qualify you can enlist. I believe that option is not automatically cancelled if you fail to qualify for OCS unless they find some medical problem. So its like starting way up & working down. You loose nothing. To be airborne (after OCS) AND Ranger (after OCS & Airborne) is definitely an asset as an officer, especially in prestige as a young LT. You may wear those 2 patches forever even though you might fly a desk later. But in the end your competence and military talent count the most. I was neither airborne nor Ranger but had no problems as far as promotion was concerned. When you graduate from OCS you will be so fit, that you will pass airborne & ranger with few problems if you put your mind to it.

    Default hello from Afghanistan!!!

Big Mac is no longer is charge. What a shame. Anyway, 15 months tours went out the water last year. Dont say 15 because I want to hurry up and get home as soon as possible. A year in Iraq and now a year here. I am so burnt out.

Anyway, you get SPC when you enlist not CPL. Some units dont even put soldiers in CPL slots like mine until recently. The first one and it was a female. She is very high speed. Anyway, if you have a degree, go for OCS. They will train you to be a leader. You wouldnt apply for a stock boy position with a degree right? Not knocking privates or joes. We all have an important role but you are qualified to have more responsibility so go for it.

I am on duty now for 18 hours straight and im dead lol.

PFC stiltner, if you do it, go full bore and don't f.. around. Go to a good college and sign up. Before, make sure you qualify physically or you may waste your time. That is, have an Army physical and get it recorded. Army ROTC will give you credit as a veteran, that is, you will only need to do Senior ROTC. I understand that is connected with a small paycheck to help you thru College/U. (I got 50 bucks/mo many moons ago). When you get your BA/BS you get 2LT, provided you did all the Senior ROTC. Good luck.

    Thank you for the advice.
