Default Becoming Officer in Army from AF Enlisted.

If anyone can help answer a few questions I would be greatly appreciative. I am seperating from active duty Air Force after 10 years of service. Would I be a good candidate for the Army as an Officer in the Army Reserves or Army National Guard? I am 31 years old and am in excellent physical shape even for Army standards. The jobs I am interested in are Financial Manager (MOS 44A) and Hospital Administrator (MFA 70A). I hold a B.S in Management and also have an MBA degree, both from highly rated institutions (if that matter I am not sure). Staying in the Air Force reserves I will be unable to become an officer due to manning and budget cuts. Thank you for any input on this matter.

AFJosh, when I was active there was an age limit on 2LTs. If I remember right it was 32. I was 28 when I graduated from Army ROTC and had 4 years active USAF EM as service time. When I was commissioned, I thought I was the oldest 2LT in the Army and in fact never met an older one. But my age never hurt me getting ahead. I was provided all the opportunities the younger guys had. In fact the Army gives a hootin' holler about your age. Talent & performance counts. The point is, your degrees are great, but you haven't graduated from OCS or ROTC and that is a severe drawback, because without that you can't be commissioned. Therefore, I suggest you go to a College Campus ROTC office. Just walk in and present them with your questions and see what they say. I know they will at least spare you junior ROTC, perhaps more.

For a Reserve Officer you will first have to see if the 44 series jobs are available locally. The USAR will let you travel outside the normal 50 mile radius for certain ranks and positions.

Then you need to go to the unit and see if they can get you into the "Direct Commisioning Program". You will need a CDR interview and recommendation for the board anyway so you may be able to kill two birds with one stone. Dress appropriately, no jeans, t-shirts ect. Remember your first impression is a lasting impression.

A USAR Recruiter can get you pointed in the right direction and help you locate a job and unit, he/ she may also know about the Direct Commissioning Program, most USAR Recruiters are high speed since it is their possition for their entire career. They can also help you get into the SMP Program through ROTC.

    Best of luck.
