    Default DWI and Medical MOS's

I scored high on the ASVAB, but have a DWI on my record. I want to be a medic, or at least something in the medical field. My recruiter (Army Reserves) says the DWI eliminates me from all medical jobs, BUT if I go ahead and enlist and do some other job for a year or two I could probably transfer into a medical job. Something sounds fishy about this. Is this true?

That doesn't sound very promising.... hopefully someone can help out with this matter..
I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something I can do.

No it doesn't, does it. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with transferring to a different MOS within a relatively short period of time after enlistment. And if anyone knows whether or not the Army would be willing to 'forgive' the DWI and allow me to transfer into a medical MOS at all, or if my recruiter is maybe just telling me what I want to hear.

If you're allowed to transfer to another MOS it has to be one that's understrength & your present one has to be overstrength.

    Isn't medical usually overstrength?

As a rule, yes but that's variable. If they're allowing people to enlist with a medical MOS that means there are slots available or at least projected to be available at the time the recruit begins AIT.

There's no telling what will be available by the time he ships, finishes his AIT in his contracted MOS & tries to reclassify.

I think right now is the time to get in the Army with just about any available MOS. I always tell people who are interested to go deep in the MOS chart & have a plan B, C & D if not more. Always have several MOSs that you might be interested in to fall back on. The trouble with that is that you won't know if you like the MOS until you finish your training & actually work in it.

He's going for Reserves so his job selection is already limited.

I haven't signed yet. Would National Guard be a better option?

Are there more MOS's available through the National Guard than the reserves? Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks.
