Default Can i join the U.S Army with this tattoo on my hand?

Ok, now I pretty much have an idea that the answer is no, but I want to verify. I have 1 tattoo on the back of my hand which is pretty much covered. It is the outline of the Arizona state and on the inside it says Phoenix 602 with a star marking the capital. Would this fall under gang related? I really want to go into a new direction in life and enlisting would do me some good. I have no criminal background and i'm taking my ged test friday. Also, does having a ged rather than a diploma effect my chances too?

Only a Recruiter wil be able to tell if it's gang-related. Is it? If so then I'm sure that it's on his list. Then you'll have to have it removed. If it's not then you'll have to have a waiver which I think is fairly easy to obtain even in a no-waiver environment. It shouldn't be a big deal but I'll defer to our resident Recruiters, Dibblejr & MPclk2006.

As far as GEDs go - Good on you on getting one. Unfortunately the Army isn't enlisting those with GEDs at this time. You'll need 15 100 level college credits to go with it. The Army considers a GED +15 equal to a H.S. diploma. As a matter of fact it only requires 15 credits GED or not. Start checking with your local community college & enroll.

This might change in the future but even if the start letting GEDs in while you're working on your 15 credits I'd still get them if I were you. This will enhance your profitability while you're in the Army.

Time to start preparing yourself for the Army. Google "APFT" & find out what score you need to obtain at your age level. Likewise Google "ASVAB" & take as many practice tests that you can & use the study guides. Meet your Recruiter being able to get a good ASVAB score so you're able to get the best score possible at MEPS where it counts. Use any waiting time you have for your enlistment in preparing yourself. Even if it takes a half or full year. That time will go fast & use it wisely.

    Good luck!

^^ You did a great job of covering the basics.

I would suguest to the OP since you have a GED and want to enlist you should make yourself marketable. You have time. Get your 15 Credit Hours of College. If it's a $ issue borrow it from family ect. you can pay them back when you enlist.

IMO- GED slots will be a long time down the road. I could be wrong but with all of the Military cutbacks why chance it? If yout take 2 semesters you could be ready by this Fall. You just need to take 5 (3 CH classes or however you want to dice it).

Stand tall and stand out from the other GED applicants that will be in a hold status while life passes by. Go get those college credits and you will be considered a HS Grad by Army accounts.

We wont even worry about your tattoo right now, you are DQ right now b/c you have no GED, and even with a GED you cant join, and I am 995 sure that tattoo is gang related, I dont care if you werent in a gang, but im willing to bet that is a gang tattoo, just like the Houstone gang that wear all Houston sports team jerseys, hats, tattoos of the Houston downtown outline, Astros star, etc, etc...

^^ooops I missed it. (non GED yet) most individuals that attended GED classes pass the GED exam.

If you do pass the GED see if your Recruiter can at least get you to the ASVAB while the GED info is still fresh in your head. You will need a 50 if they ever open the slot.

I too beliee that your TAT is gang related- may look cool and all but lose the TAT prior to even think about enlisting. There is an over the counter drug that is being advertised on the radio that states it will permanetly remove a tat in 1-4 months.

Even if you cant enlist in the Army (hypathetically speaking) a gang related TAT or one that appears to be gang related (visible ) will hinder your chance of getting a real job in the civilian world.

If it is not on the Army's Gang Related list and it appears gang related you will be asked questions, pictures will be taken and research will be conducted before they will even consider a waiver for it. The Army spends a lot of money for various reasons keeping up with Gangs and Gang related activity and tatoos.

Spare yourself the hassle and ge done with it.

Good luck on your upcoming GED test.
