    Default MEPS & The ASVAB

    Hello All,

Over a year and a half ago, I took the Asvab at MEPS and got a 46. I took some time to consider my options with each branch of service and decided to go Army Strong. I leave Sunday night for MEPS in San Diego. I take my ASVAB (by choice) and physical after on Monday. I'm trying to consider what jobs I would be interested in but, it's hard when I don't know what options I even have with the score that I received. Say I score between a 46 and a 60 on this test, what options would open up for me? I'm looking for any advice! Thanks in advance!

It's best that you talk to a Recruiter. the ASVAB is just a qualifying test for entry in the military. For each individual MOS a line score is required to qualify. That is the combined score of several of the individual tets in the ASVAB such as Math+English+Mechanical, etc.

You might want to study some more & retake the ASVAB. The higher score you get the more MOSs you'll be able to chose from. Some of your choices may not be available. You can find study guides & practice tests online by Googling "ASVAB".

First you should tell your Recruiter what you are interested in so we can match Army jobs to your interest, if not I can tell you all day long you qualify for jobs such as (lets say) Plumber but you hate that job...once your Recruiter knows your interests then he can tell you what kind of jobs you "might" qualify for with that score, then after you take the ASVAB since you want to retake it (remember if you score lower, you keep that lower score) he can pull up all the jobs you qualify for and temporarly reserve you one for when you go to MEPS, I dont know why you want to go through the whole thing again, your ASVAB and more than likely your physical are still good if its been less than 2 years, you would just need at the most an inspect...

    MPclk2006,

The reason I chose to re-asvab is a long story. About a year and a half ago I was interested in the Marine Corps. The recruiter that I was paired with, was AWFUL. Didn't give me any advice about anything, especially the ASVAB. I was always poor in the math category but had I known what was really on the ASVAB, I would've studied. He advised me that I didn't need to study and that I would do just fine. I got a 48. Which is not passing for the Marine Corps (if your a female) so I didn't physical. After that, I was upset and chose to remove myself from that recruiter. I took some time away to spend with my family, working, etc. I continued to explore my options with the military. I looked into every service branch. The Army has more options for me, so I'm back to being a recruit. I never took the physical so, I'm actually not going through the WHOLE process again, just a part of it. *haha*. And, as for the ASVAB and retaking it, as much as I dread sitting there for hours to do it again, I know I can do better now that I am prepared. I've been out of school for 5 years. I hated math back then, and I still hate it now. But at least this way, I've been able to use many resources online as well as the good ol' "Asvab for dummies" study guide to get myself ready.

Because I am waiting on a waiver for being dual military (I have to complete the family care plan which is still on it's way back from Maryland via mail) I will Asvab Monday, physical Tuesday and go home. My recruiter will sit down and show me the jobs I was able to qualify for and I will get to pick one, go back to MEPS on Thursday or Friday (as my paper work should be in) to swear in and meet with the career counselor.

Very long reply, I apologize! Thank you for your response! It was very much appreciated!

Thats my bad for some reason I thought I read that you took the physical also, sorry. Have you taken the practice test recently at the Recruiter's computer? What did you get on it? Good luck to you on the process and I applaud you for even thinking about joining and becoming a dual military servicemember...thats hard to do...

Whatever you do, dont go Combat Engineer (21b), or Infantry 11b! I made that mistake and my whole enlistment was horrible. It might sound bad ass to kick in doors, and all that stuff but there is more BS that go along with those jobs than what its worth.

I haven't taken the practice test but have taken many online tests and tests out of 3 different study guides. Thank you for your support. My husband is currently active duty Marine Corps. After his enlistment is up next August, he wants to transfer to the Army as well. I would like to thank you and many of the other service men who take the time out of thweir lives to help guide others on sites like these. Most of the questions I've had so far have been answered 10 times over by using these forums. Its awesome!

that's terrible that you didn't enjoy your job. Then again, I guess that's why they call it work, huh? Jk. I wish you the best in the future.

Ps: Thank you for the heads up but I think having boobs is possibly a DQ for those jobs anyways. LOL.

Just b/c you had a bad experience with those jobs or the Army it does not mean that everyone will, I just talked to a prior service 21B this weekend and he didnt complain, I have a buddy who is 11B been deployed and all and yes he tells me about the bad days but again, doesnt complain and tell people not to do that job...

I like how your first post is to push someone of what could be a meaningful experience in the Army, besides they dont allow females to be 11B's (why dont you read the thread before replying next time?)
