Thanks for the post. My wife was telling me about this about a month ago because she knows a guy that has worked for DOD for a very long time. Here's my question:

Suppose the person joining the army is currently 36, has taken the ASVAB (score 88 - Army 125) and has filled out all the paperwork, background check done, had their degree verified, and is just waiting on any opening to sign up at MEPS. But suppose, since the army has already reached 104% of their recruiting goal for 2011, there are no jobs before April 1st.

Is there any way to get a waiver? Are you grandfathered in if you already started the process?

Thank you. (I would ask my recruiter, but it is Saturday and he is not a very aggressive recruiter, doesn't really seem all that interested and don't want to rock the boat or bother him today).

Any help would be so much appreciated.

Darned good question! I was wondering tjhat myself. Hopefully a Recruiter will get online & let you know soon. That failing ask the Recruiter that you were working with. He already has time invested in you. There might be a way he can expedite things if you're not grandfathered & if the age limit will DQ you. Either that or choose an MOS that has immediate openings with the thought in mind that you can reclassify sometime downrange. Get your foot in the door at least.

Thank you MSG Glenn, the problem is that as of a few days ago, there are no openings in anything (according to him) - he had to get on the phone and call around...and still nothing. Hard to believe, but I know he's an honest man. He just is so laid back :-)

Keep checking. Make sure he's checking, too. Those availability lists can change in a very short time.

I think you are grandfathered if you have a contract already signed and a ship date. If you are just going through MEPS, you have two plus weeks to contract.

Either join before the deadline or you will not get grandfathered in at ALL. April 1st, you will not be able to enlist if you are over the age limit.
