Default Air Force Veteran to Army Reserve

New to the forums, seems like a great place to get some good information!

Anyways, here's the deal. I'm 26 years old, got out of the Air Force in May of this year after having no option to re-train out of an over-manned career field. I had to get out, but got my honorable discharge and extended medical benefits until the end of November.

I have been in contact with a recruiter recently, and everything checks out to head into the Army Reserve in Oklahoma and the Dallas area. I've got the initial paperwork to fill out, and he is going to get back to me by the end of the week and fill me in on the type of jobs that will be available. I have a current MEPS physical as I attempted to get a Navy job over the summer. He says he could have all my paperwork done by next week to get in so long as I give the go ahead. So far, it is depending on what jobs are available, but I am trying to put myself in the mindset of not being picky, as there is nothing I love more than putting on the uniform, and I didn't realize how much I did until it was gone.

Anyone know what I should expect? Any sort of jobs I should push for? I am considering it now more than ever, and any input is appreciated!

Congratulations on deciding to go Army!

The Army Reserve will have limited choices of MOSs. You'll have to take one that the unit has on their manning charts & have slots for. If you're not particular then you should be ok. Most jobs in the Reserve are Service and Service & Support jobs with a few Combat Arms slots available. It seems the Army National Guard is just the opposite.

I was an Active Army Adviser to a Reserve Division when we got several guys who were trying to transition from active duty but they were MPs & we had none on our manning charts. They either had to reclassify or go to the local Guard unit which had an MP unit. Since it was out of my area of responsibility I don't know what happened to them.

    Good luck!

Apparently going to be getting a tentative MOS list on Monday morning. We'll see how that goes.

Can anyone give me a true clarification of what the BCT atmosphere is like for prior service? I've seen a lot of conflicting accounts, but have never seen a straight answer from someone who has actually done it.

That's because until recently, relatively few prior service were required to repeat Basic Training - and the more senior members here all did basic many years ago, with significant changes since. You can count on it being demanding, challenging and exhausting - and from what I've read prior service are given slightly more respect than new recruits, but not a whole lot. Just be prepared to train hard and do what is expected of you, and you'll be OK.

Nothing yet. I'm afraid my eyesight is going to limit my choices of jobs, unfortunately.

Only thing with any openings in the local unit is 42a. Of course, my eyesight probably limits me to this type of thing anyhow.

MP is a recruiter and a 42A. So when he gets time hopefully he'll get back to you.

What's wrong with your eyesight? I couldn't imagine the Army being too picky on an admin guy's eyesight. But I've been wrong.
TANKER - That dusty, crusty, grease-covered, dirty, sweaty, bright-eyed, fuzzie-faced,
    haircut-needing, beer-drinking, underrated, over-worked, underpaid,
oversexed, little shit, who can take a tank and do more battlefield damage in
ten minutes than a Grunt squad can do all day.

If you ain't Armor, you ain't shit.

I don't think in this case it's them being picky. I'm sure I can qualify for some other admin jobs, but these are two slots with immediate openings at the local reserve center.
