    Default Some questions about joining...

Hi. I have a few questions about the MOS I want and need some suggestions. I'm enlisting into the DEP program later this year so I just need some clarification.

I like to operate vehicles and some of the MOS's I wanted were 19k, 19d, and if those don't workout, 31b. Any suggestions as to which is a better choice for me? One of my friends said that 19k is slowly decreasing in how many people receive that MOS. So, I just want something that isn't going to get me laid off and is within my interest range.

Also, if I do get laid off, am I able to re-class instead?

    Thanks!

FINALLY. I've been coming to this site for a minute now and you're the very first person that's been interested in the best MOS the Army has to offer.

I'm a 19K, have been for about four years. 19K is either a love or a hate depending on the person. Usually your day is spent in the motorpool fixing whatever is wrong with the tank, and there's always something wrong. If there's a problem you can't fix, or if it's above your Army designated skill level you have the tank mechanics who will become your best friends.

When you're not in the motorpool then you're probably inside getting a class on something. Weapons, radios, tank formations, just Tanker things.

A few times a year you go to gunnery. That's where you put all of your training to the test and qualify as a tank crew. You'll be spending a Godless amount of hours in the tank getting to know your vehicle and your other three crewmembers. You guys will be a family.

19K is also drastically decreasing. It's getting harder and harder to get promoted, or even stay a 19K. A couple weeks ago nearly all of the E4 and below were notified they will become 19D's when they leave the unit. This sort of thing is going on Army wide. So far the NCO Corps hasn't been touched. It's also being rumored that 19D and 19K will begin to combine into one MOS.

In my biased opinion, 19K is the most fun out of those MOS'. 19D and 11B are fairly similar, and not a lot of people like MP's lol.

If you have any questions or want some information about being a Tanker, just say something. I'll go on all day about this job.
TANKER - That dusty, crusty, grease-covered, dirty, sweaty, bright-eyed, fuzzie-faced,
    haircut-needing, beer-drinking, underrated, over-worked, underpaid,
oversexed, little shit, who can take a tank and do more battlefield damage in
ten minutes than a Grunt squad can do all day.

If you ain't Armor, you ain't shit.

Haha I know right. Too bad it's at a time when 19K is being heavily downsized.

Not to mention I have not seen 19D, 19K or 31B come up in weeks. Also, if you score lower than a 50 on the ASVAB you are sh*t out of luck on picking your dream choice job...now if you score a 49 and lower, you have to pick a job at the recruiting station before going to MEPS (now we know that the list at the stations is always a little shorter than the one at MEPS) and we CANNOT call the ROC (Recruiting Operation Center) to unlock the job you want at the office (again if you fall in the 49 or below). So you are at the mercy of what comes up on the list, and trust me right now almost NOTHING is coming up at the station.

Yeah, it's getting to the point where it doesn't much matter what MOS you want. If you want to join, it's coming down to taking what pops up.

Haha. Awesome. I would like to know more about 19K. So are they still recruiting for that MOS? Or did they stop because they are downsizing? Also MP is the choice if 19K or 19D don't work out. Maybe there is something more like 19K that isn't downsizing?

Oh I am. 11C, 11B, 13B, 13M, 14E, 14M, 14R, 89B, and a lot more. Also, I am aiming to get a 90 or above on the ASVAB. Do you think if I get a high score on the ASVAB it would help qualify me for some of those? Thanks.

A 90 will qualify you for any MOS that's available. Available being the key word.
