If it has a loop on the backside it's probably a button. I find quite a few of them while metal detecting but none like that. I found a Civil War US Army doctor's button which I sold to a collector for $150, exactly the list price in a collector's price list the buyer had. Others that I found were a Civil War US Army Infantry button & an Artillery button which I sold as a pair for $250. I need to find a Cavalry button so I can complete the guy's set. They're all identical except for an "I", "A" & "C" on the breast of the eagle.

Maybe that button is worth doing some research on.

It is similar but not identical to the eagle used as a logo for Sturm Ruger & Co. on their firearms. Are there any markings of any type on the piece? Does it have a standard clutch back, or is it designed to be sewn on? These things are important when identifying badges, insignia, tokens and similar items...

He said that it's a standard clutch back, I asked him about the markings on the back but he hasn't said anything back yet. And you're right, it is pretty similar to their logo.

The eagle is or has been used as a logo by so many different empires (Prussian, Ottoman, German, Russian, Roman) and now modern countries (Germany, The United States, Mexico), companies and sports teams that tracking down this particular graphic may well be complicated. My first thought was it might be a firearms manufacturer, then possibly a logo for the Combined Federal Campaign, then the US Post Office - none of which panned out. But I wish you luck in finding the source of your item!
