I am sure it was a morale-booster! If these were manufactured by German POW's out of recycled toilet paper, I'd feel better.

Much like the Tootsie Roll conundrum, the world may never know.

Royal Hawaiian Hotel Grounds - WWII by m.gross196, on Flickr

(Hawaii, November 1944) Norbert Hildebrand, Roy Johnson, and my grandfather Selvin Hoffman at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel Grounds. Norbert always loved his pipe!

(Fort Sam Houston, TX) Not everyone is labeled in this picture. The back row (l to r) is Bill Wennerberg, my grandfather Selvin Hoffman, unknown, unknown. The bottom row (l to r) is unknown, unknown, Norbert "Nibs" Hildebrand.

There are two additional names listed on the back but I do not how they correspond to the photo: "Pat Capobianco, pusher" and Bob Summers.

What units in the Ohio National Guard? I was in the 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment. It has a very long combat history in both WWI and WWII in both Theaters, European and Pacific. More battle streamers on our colors than most units in the entire Army.
