    Default Global Response Force

I wish I could get called up for a 3 month deployment. But God speed to them! I am in the 50s finally.

Last flight of Fort Bragg soldiers returns from Afghanistan

The last flight of 82nd Airborne Division soldiers from Afghanistan arrived Friday morning, greeted at Fort Bragg's Green Ramp by friends and family.

It marks the first time since 2010 the entire 82nd Airborne Division has been home.

The returning soldiers are with the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team. They spent the past three months in Afghanistan after deploying on short notice as part of the Global Response Force.

About 130 soldiers returned Friday, the last of 700 soldiers from the battalion who deployed. They were part of a larger force of more than 9,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne who had spent all or part of the last year in Afghanistan.

The soldiers of the 3rd Brigade had, at most, about two weeks' notice of their deployments, with some soldiers leaving earlier than others.

"He came home and said, 'I'm leaving,' " Edith Churbe said of her husband, Pfc. Devin Churbe.

She and the couple's two daughters, Julia, 3, and Jackie, 1, were on hand to greet their soldier. The girls waved American flags and wore tutus decorated with camouflage.

Edith Churbe said the past three months were impossible to prepare for, but passed in a blur.

She said the morning of her husband's return was surreal.

"It was, like, I didn't think it's happening yet," Churbe said.

Staff Sgt. Jason Thomas said the deployment went just as expected - "pretty smooth."

"Three months is better than nine months," he said.

In Afghanistan, the soldiers of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team - mostly soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment but also including other paratroopers from within the brigade - were tasked with clearing the way for the withdrawal of the 1st Brigade Combat Team.

The 1st Brigade Combat Team was deployed to southern Ghazni province in the spring. The 3rd Brigade soldiers allowed them to safely leave Ghazni on their way back to the U.S.

"It looks like we accomplished our goals," said Lt. Col. David Gardner, commander of the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

Gardner praised his soldiers for their work.

He said the deployment came while the brigade was serving as the Global Response Force, the nation's military first responders.

"As part of the GRF, that's what we trained for and that's what we prepared our families for," Gardner said. "They were extremely enthusiastic because they wanted to contribute."

    His soldiers agreed.

"The way we train, we've got to be ready to go anywhere," said Sgt. Sean Long, who was welcomed back from his third deployment by his wife, Christina. "Our bags are always packed."

The 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment was the last Fort Bragg unit to deploy to Afghanistan.

Another brigade battalion, the 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, began a yearlong deployment to Afghanistan in April 2011.

In addition to the 3rd Brigade, soldiers with the 82nd Airborne Division headquarters, the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade and the 1st and 4th brigade combat teams have completed recent tours in Afghanistan.

Sounds good Chief.. we have them here in Europe also... they are a good idea but only when clear instructions consistent with clear goals and objectives are given to the Global Response Team aka Rapid Response Team for a deployment.

Good to see the 82nd's team is home again safe with job done..
