I don't think any of my documents were checked when I went into the Army after being out of the Navy for 14 years. Most if not all of my paperwork was in the form of original documents. Then there was a fire at St. Louis where all of the records were kept. Many were destroyed including a portion of mine. As far as I know none of my original papers were checked but they couldn't be because of the fire & they were taken at face value. I was able too keep all of my badges & medals & all of my Navy schools were documented by my paperwork. Had I known that I would have entered the Army as a General!

That was many moons ago,by now the Army Recruitment Team have it all figured out. In this case someone didnt run the SSN/ DD214 through the DMDC and what a mess it has caused.

Kind of funny how this new incident has been kept pretty low key

I enlisted after the fire, however I have a letter where I requested documents from the archives that states some of my files were destroyed in that fire. I did receive copies of my fathers complete SRB (USMC Retired) you can believe how embarrassed the Supervisor that sent them to me was when I contacted her. It helped my father a lot since it proved all the years he spent in and around Agent Orange. He did 26 years USMC and retired in 1974.

I would think with all or at least most documentation kept on computers with plenty of backup that things like this couldn't happen anymore.

There's always someone who falls through the cracks, though. I have to wonder if there were any civilians involved in his enlistment.

And Dibble - tell your dad thanks for his many years of service & Semper Fi!

^^ Due to my stupid, crazy stepmother I havent spoken to my father in 5 years. Prior to that it was 19 years of silence. When I PCS'd to Fort Drum (only 2 hours away from my home) i tried to give them a second chance, it lasted 2 years before my stepmother started her crap. She has 10 kids of her own (all grown) so at least he has someone to talk with. Shame is unless she goes first he will not even know about being a grandfather.

My father has 2 of his own children living, me and my younger brother. The other younger brother passed away a year before my father retired.

He has not seen my younger brother for around 10 years and has not seen my brothers 2 sons in at least 7-8 years because of his wife. They have been married 30 years and she only allows him to speak with her children. She is the apitamy of the "female dog". However, if my father really wanted to see us he would put the grub in her place. So I also blame her.

    Long, long story.

I think you're calling your stepmother a bitch. Sometimes I'm a bit slow & you have to be explicit so I can understand. Anyway she sure sounds like one. A person who prevents her husband to see his own kids is something else.

I've heard of that happening all to often. It's a shame.

YEs, you are correct. When I had my heart attack she wanted me to drive 2 hours to "cut their grass" because my father "had surgery to a toe that was injurred in Vietnam". When my wife told her "no but hell no", you should have heard the messages she left on our answerring machine. Every other word started with "F". You know you are bad/ evil when your own children move to NC, TX, CA and NB to get away from you.

I told my father if she passes before me he will see me again otherwise it will be at TAPS. Theres only so much anyone can bare so I refuse to have anymore stress than I already have.

My neighbor said almost the exact same thing as you. I will say this my father never once visited my house at Fort Drum, he also never visited me while I was in the USMC at Camp LeJuene or when I left the USMC and lived in Jacksonville, NC, even though they visited her kids in Raleigh and Charolette, NC. Thanks, but he made his bed and after several attempts to help ammend the relationship I have given up.

I even built his profile and posted on USMC TWS his picks (ones I had or my mother had) but his wife would not let him visit it. He is a 76 year old PW'd man. I still answer his buddies that sometimes message him. Since I cannot recall everything about his service it is pretty basic other than the few old pics.

I just hope that others that read this thread can learn something about what happens when step parents interfere with the spouses childrens relationships. NIP IT IN THE BUD BEFORE ITS TOO LATE

Sorry SFC dibblejr..Nothing gets in the way of family. Except, a new member that doesn't want to belong. Like Top, said, I've heard similar stories a few times from my troop and our friends. It's a real shame. You've done everything you can and that says alot. You have my respect for you're continued efforts to reach out.

Answers sought for how man faked way as NCO
By Danny Robbins - The Associated Press
    Posted : Wednesday May 26, 2010 7:14:09 EDT
DALLAS — A Colorado congressman wants Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to provide answers on how a Texas man apparently tricked the Army into allowing him to enter the reserves as a noncommissioned officer.

Mike Coffman, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, delivered a letter to Gates' office on Monday asking him to address issues raised by an Associated Press story last Friday detailing the case of Jesse Bernard Johnston III.

The AP reported that Johnston, 26, was given the rank of sergeant when he enlisted in the reserves in February despite no military experience other than spending six weeks in a 12-week Marine officer candidate course while he was in college in 2004. Because Johnston didn't complete the course, he never became a Marine.

The Army has declined to comment, citing an ongoing investigation.

Coffman, a Republican who served with the Marines in Iraq and the first Gulf War, wrote that he wants to know whether the Johnston case is an isolated incident or indicative of "a larger systematic failure" in vetting enlistees.

Coffman wrote that his office has obtained a copy of a phony Marine discharge document portraying Johnston as a veteran of campaigns in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He said the document, known in the military as a DD-214, may have been used by Johnston when he joined the Army Reserve.

"The fact that the Department of the Army does not immediately verify that someone has or has not previously served is both stunning and frightening," he wrote.

If someone without prior military experience could convince the Army to enlist him as a sergeant based on phony paperwork, it raises the possibility of a terrorist doing the same thing, Coffman said in his letter.

A Pentagon spokeswoman said a response will be provided to Coffman "as appropriate."

Johnston joined the Army's Corps Support Airplane Company based at the Fort Worth Naval Air Station. Although he never went overseas, members of his unit have been deployed to Iraq as part of an aviation battalion set up to destroy improvised explosive devices.

Since March, Johnston has been stationed at Fort Rucker in Alabama, the primary training base for Army aviation. He did not respond to phone and e-mail messages from the AP. A base spokeswoman has said she cannot comment on Johnston's status because of the ongoing investigation.

Johnston's ex-wife, also an Army reservist, has stated in an affidavit that Johnston obtained his rank in the reserves by falsifying documents that made it appear that he'd served in the Marines. Melanie Rolfing's sworn statement was filed in Fort Worth family court as part of a petition in which she sought to have her two-year-old marriage to Johnston annulled on grounds of fraud.

In the affidavit, Rolfing said Johnston led her to believe he'd served as a Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan and earned a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. She also said he would attend military functions in a Marine dress uniform that included the medals.

A judge issued a decree granting the annulment on May 4 when Johnston declined to contest it.
