Question Tapping magazines on your helmet... What's the point?

Anybody know why soldiers tap M16 rifle magazines on their helmets? I saw it in the movie Apocalypse Now, and Black Hawk Down thought it was fiction until I saw a Marine do it on YouTube. What's the point?

Personally I don’t think it really does anything. I also tap my magazine just to ensure all the rounds are seated to the rear of the magazine. I have never tested to see if I tapped the rounds to the forward end of the magazine if it caused any misfeeds. Most magazine caused misfeeds come from a bad internal spring.

Smacking your magazine is just one of those things, like caressing your weapon and calling it Susie. It just makes you feel better.

I think most people do it, even though like you said it probably doesn't do anything.

I hold my magazine with my right hand and give it one or two good hits with the palm of my left hand to line up all the rounds, kind of like packing cigarettes lol.

Ballgame is right. It's possible that it could seat the ammo better but that should be taken care of while loading. Now me- I tap mine every time. Personally I think it's a combination of a tradition passed down from generation to generation & superstition. It probably started when tapping the mag was a near neccessity or started by a DS who was superstitious.

I even find myself giving the mag on my .40 pistol a tap but since I don't normally wear a helmet anymore I give it a whack on my hand. Gotta keep tradition, you know.

    super +1

I have done it dozens of times because it looks cool and I pay homage to all those war movies. But sometimes (especially with blank rounds), they do not sit properly to the rear and when we are low crawling on the ground; sand and grit gets into the magazine so you want to break up some of the formation. I still experienced jams after doing the "tap".

Sometimes, I even tap the magazine against the butt stock and ground; not always on the helmet.

+1 Almost a necessity with blanks. All you have is the cartridge with no brass and this will allow misalignment of your rounds.

Speaking of blanks, I remember a buddy of mine cleaning his M16 with WD-40 when we were on a training exercise on Fort Hood. Not the best of idea’s. He lost the hair on his hands, eyebrows, and his bangs when the flash fire came back out the ejection port.

Do NOT clean your weapon with WD-40.

Liquid Wrench works better than WD-40, lol. Better flames.

Its just looks so cool, I do it without a helmet sometimes even though it hurts my head hahahahaha....

Its done so that the rounds that are loaded on the magazine all aling flush with the edge so when the magazine gets loaded into the M16 they dont jam...
